CBD for Anxiety

It is noted in numerous studies around the world that 18% of the global population are reported to suff­er from an anxiety related disorder. Anxiety outpaced depression, making it the most common mental health concern in our modern times. Rather than commonly prescribed treatments, a lot of people are now turning to CBD products to treat and assist with their anxiety.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a natural active compound from the cannabis plant. It is the non-intoxicating component, predominantly found in the hemp plant. CBD can be sourced from hemp (scientific name: cannabis sativa) or marijuana (scientific name: cannabis sativa indica)

The conventional treatment for anxiety is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). SSRIs are only available by prescription from a registered doctor, psychiatrist or physician. Some people with anxiety prefer to manage their condition with Cannabidiol (CBD) rather than a SSRI.

CBD works by aff­ecting the body’s endocannabinoid system which naturally produces cannabinoids, such as anandamide. This cannabinoid acts upon the body’s CB1 and CB2 receptors and plays a key role in regulating fear and anxiety. Supplementing with CBD increases anandamide by preventing it from being degraded by the enzyme FAAH (fatty acid amide hydrolase). In short, more anandamide means less anxiety!

Further, CBD has been found to increase serotonin, a neurotransmitter which controls mood and behaviour. While more research is needed on the long-term benefits of CBD oil for anxiety, initial studies suggest strong eff­ectiveness.

CBD may also benefit people with other forms of anxiety, such as social anxiety disorder (SAD) and anxiety caused from post-traumatic stress (PTSD).
