CBD for Heart Health

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a natural active compound from the cannabis plant. It is the non-intoxicating component, predominantly found in the hemp plant.

Cannabidiol’s (CBD) anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties have been known to reduce risk factors that can lead to heart disease. Research on CBD is current but positive benefits have been discovered. Early studies are showing the benefits of CBD on patients with heart disease. These include:

  • Reducing irregular heartbeats, also known as arrhythmias
  • Lowering blood pressure
  • Reducing inflammation

Irregular Heart Beats (Heart Arrhythmias) – While some heart arrhythmias are harmless, others can be life-threatening. Studies have shown how CBD is “cardioprotective” by lowering ventricular arrhythmias. It was concluded that CBD could help with the antiarrhythmic effect.

Lowering Blood Pressure – High blood pressure creates damage to the body for years before you even start feeling symptoms. Hypertension can damage or narrow your arteries due to the high pressure inside your body. When high blood pressure occurs for an extended period, it can start forming bulges, known as aneurysms.
High blood pressure may also be the culprit of an enlarged heart when it’s forced to work harder to pump blood, leading to a higher risk of a heart attack. Hypertension can also cause heart failure and coronary artery disease, both of which lead to chest pains and heart attacks. Lowering your blood pressure is, therefore, crucial to reducing your risk of heart disease and this is where CBD may help. Researchers have found that CBD can lower blood pressure by widening blood vessels and enabling the blood to flow more easily reducing your risk to heart and heart related complication.

Reducing Inflammation – Researchers have already noted the benefits of CBD on inflammation-causing diseases such as multiple sclerosis and arthritis. CBD can also be of benefit when it comes to the inflammation of the heart.

Reports have noted how CBD contains significant anti-inflammatory properties, even higher than the usual supplements such as antioxidants, Omega-3 and vitamin C. CBD may also be a useful supplement for alleviating common side-effects of heart disease, and in some cases, can help mitigate the underlying causes of the condition, like stress.

It is also especially beneficial to people suffering from atrial fibrillation (or other arrhythmias) associated with anxiety and inflammatory causes, including atherosclerosis. Future studies need be done to directly investigate the relationship between taking CBD and cardiac health outcomes in humans.

As with any form of chronic medication or treatment, doses will vary between patients, even when it comes to consuming CBD. ( See our Dosage Table ). It is always best to consult a medical professional before taking CBD, especially if you are already suffering from a form of heart disease and you are currently taking medication.
